Republican frontrunner and former President Donald Trump is facing backlash after criticizing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for signing a six-week abortion ban.
“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said, referencing DeSantis’ move. “I think people should have exceptions. I think if it’s rape or incest or the life of the mother, I think you have to have exceptions. It’s very important.”
The former chief executive outlined his strategy for a potential federal abortion ban during an interview with Kristen Welker of NBC News. Trump intends to assemble a bipartisan group of stakeholders to hear their perspectives and create a consensus on abortion policy.
“We will agree to a number of weeks, which will be where both sides will be happy,” he told Welker. “We have to bring the country together on this issue.”
But Trump’s denouncement of the six-week abortion ban quickly gained backlash. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, also defended her fellow GOP governor. The head of the Hawkeye State signed a similar six-week abortion ban in July.
“It’s never a ‘terrible thing’ to protect innocent life. I’m proud of the fetal heartbeat bill the Iowa legislature passed and I signed in 2018 and again earlier this year,” Reynolds firmly stated. (Related: Texas judge imposes nationwide block on abortion drug mifepristone; liberals melt down.)
DeSantis acknowledged Reynolds’ sentiments in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “I applaud Governor Reynolds and the Iowa legislature for promoting a culture of life,” he wrote. “Donald Trump is wrong to attack the heartbeat bill as ‘terrible.’ Standing for life is a noble cause.”
The head of the Sunshine State even used the opportunity to attack his rival: “Trump says he will compromise with Democrats on abortion so that they’re nice to him. [But I] will never sell out conservatives to win praise from corporate media or the Left.”
While Trump’s stance on abortion immediately backfired, DeSantis’ defense of life helped him gain more support for his presidential campaign.
Following the abortion fiasco, the Never Back Down political action committee backing DeSantis ran a new television ad about the Florida governor. The 30-second ad that centered on DeSantis’ biography and political career has aired in Iowa and New Hampshire, as well as on national news outlets like Fox News and Newsmax, since September 23.
“One man worked his way through Yale University and Harvard Law School; one did not. One volunteered to serve his nation in wartime; one did not. One man stood up to [Dr. Anthony] Fauci and fought for freedom; one did not. One man won a historic reelection, and one did not,” the ad said.
It concluded by emphasizing that DeSantis is “the right man” to defeat incumbent President Joe Biden. The ad also defended the six-week abortion ban, which is often the period when a baby’s heartbeat is detected in the womb, as “the right thing to do.” Moreover, it praised the Florida governor for “promoting a culture of life”
“We have delivered in Florida on promoting a culture of life and that means signing the heartbeat bill into law. It was the right thing to do. Don’t let anyone tell you it wasn’t,” the ad stated.
