Gun control in the United States is one of the most polarizing issues in American politics. Proponents argue that banning assault weapons is a necessary step to curb mass shootings and gun-related violence. Opponents, however, believe it is a direct violation of their right to bear arms and fear it could lead to further restrictions on gun ownership.
The White House’s recent post has reignited this contentious issue, with both sides passionately defending their positions. As the administration continues to push for gun control measures, it is clear that the conversation surrounding the Second Amendment and public safety will remain a significant and divisive topic in the political arena.
To reinforce its position, the White House’s official social media account posted a controversial message, calling for a ban on assault weapons. The post, stating “It’s time,” was accompanied by an image reading, “Ban Assault Weapons.” It has since sparked widespread backlash online. Critics quickly condemned the post, accusing the Biden-Harris administration of attempting to undermine the Second Amendment. Many commenters expressed their outrage, with one user highlighting the irony of Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, who saw a surge in gun purchases in Minnesota during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots.
President Joe Biden joined gun control activists in pushing forward more initiatives to combat gun violence and trumpeted his administration’s stricter gun laws. Biden’s prescheduled remarks at the advocacy group Everytown’s Gun Safety University conference in Washington, D.C., came hours after his son Hunter was convicted on three felony counts in his federal gun trial in Delaware.
“Look, folks, you’ve helped power a movement that is turning this cause into reality,” Biden said. “Especially young people who demanded our nation do better and protect us all, who protested, who organized, who voted, who ran for office and yes, who marched for their lives. From my perspective, today is about celebrating you.”
He touted new Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) data that shows overall crime, including violent crime and murder, has fallen in the first three months of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
“The year before I came to the presidency, the murder rate was the highest increase on record. Last year, we saw the largest decrease of murder in the history of it, and those rates are continuing to fall faster than ever,” he said.
Biden later said tackling gun violence has been “a passion of mine for a long, long time,” saying he understood the pain of losing someone.
“I give you my word. I know what that feels (like), that black hole when you receive that phone call. It seems like your black hole in your chest and you’re being sucked into it. Just showing up here and all the work you’ve done takes some courage because it reminds you of the moment you got that phone call,” the president said.
“Since the law was passed and implemented, the FBI stopped more than 700 sales of firearms for individuals under 21, and about 20,000 unlicensed firearms dealers are now required to become licensed to run background checks,” the president said.
The White House’s post faced significant pushback, with social media users accusing the administration of wanting to disarm Americans. One X user remarked, “Harris’ running mate Tim Walz drove tens of thousands of his constituents to buy ‘assault rifles’ in response to the deadly BLM riots of 2020 that destroyed major Minnesota cities under his watch.”
The National Association of Gun Rights (NAGR) members noted that the Gun Control Act (GCA) and the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) System have worked to deprive gun rights from millions of Americans without due process. “These same gun control laws, which Hunter Biden is guilty of violating, are the same laws now being abused to federally bar Donald Trump from possessing a firearm for the rest of his life,” NAGR said in a statement.
NAGR brought attention to how these same gun control laws have stripped 264,000 veterans of their right to bear arms without any due process. In sum, there are north of 16 million Americans who are on the FBI’s “no-guns” NICS list.
It is the opinion of gun owners that the call to ban assault weapons is part of the broader gun control agenda advocated by the Biden administration. Biden has frequently voiced his support for stricter gun laws, aiming to reduce gun violence across the nation. However, this stance has been consistently met with strong opposition from Second Amendment advocates who view such measures as an infringement on their constitutional rights.
