Lucasfilm has fired actress and former mixed martial arts competitor Gina Cara from her role in the Star Wars spinoff “The Mandalorian.” The action came after Carano made a post on social media comparing today’s political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany’s treatment of Jews.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” said a Lucasfilm representative in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
But the statement did not mention that another Mandalorian star, lead actor Pedro Pascal, had also made a similar Nazi analogy months before and had not been fired for it.
On her Instagram account, Carano had shared an image of a woman behind chased on the street with the text accompanying it stating that the Nazis fomented public shared against Jews as part of the Holocaust. She then stated that something similar was happening in the U.S. when it came to people’s political views.
“How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” she asked in the post.
The post, which was later deleted, sparked the hashtag #FireGinaCarano. This eventually gained steam as people shared screenshots of the deleted post. Lucasfilm got wind of the post, which led to Carano’s firing.
Before the incident, Carano had gotten acclaim for her portrayal of the battle-hardened former drop trooper Cara Dune on “The Mandalorian.” The studio had been planning a spinoff show based on her character before the incident that led to her firing.
But these plans had apparently been scrapped followed a series of tweets Carano made in November. Carano, a staunch conservative, had echoed the claims made by then-President Donald Trump that the 2020 election was stolen. In addition, Carano had also posted comments questioning whether facemasks were an essential tool in fighting the Wuhan coronavirus.
Carano isn’t the only actor from “The Mandalorian” who’s made Nazi and Holocaust analogies. Lead actor Pedro Pascal who portrays the titular Mandalorian on the show has also done the same, but with no repercussions.
In June of 2018, Pascal compared Jews in a Nazi concentration camp to “children in cages” – an obvious dig at the Trump administration’s handling of illegal immigrants. But Pascal’s tweet didn’t use a photo from the U.S. Instead, it features a 2010 photo of Palestinian children waiting to be fed at a soup kitchen.
Meanwhile, a more recent Instagram post by Pascal likened Trump supporters losing the 2020 election to the Confederacy and Naxi Germany losing in 1865 and 1945 respectively.
Despite these messages, Pascal has yet to face any sort of repercussion. Now, it seems that the reason for this has more to do with Carano’s political views and status as a supporter of Trump than the actual content of her posts.
“They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw,” said an unnamed source familiar with the situation to Zero Hedge.
Other prominent conservatives have also noted this and pointed out Lucasfilm’s hypocrisy. One of these was Texas Senator Ted Cruz who pointed out how Carano’s casting in “The Mandalorian” had broken barriers in the Star Wars universe.
“She played a woman who kicked ass & who girls looked up to. She was instrumental in making Star Wars fun again,” Cruz tweeted. “Of course Disney canceled her.”
