Country music group Lady Antebellum is changing its name to “Lady A” in an attempt to appease Black Lives Matter, which apparently sees the word antebellum as having “racist” intonations. But there is already a Lady A in the music world and she has black skin.
The original Lady A, a 61-year-old black singer from Seattle who has released multiple records under the same name, was reportedly shocked to learned that the all-white pop country group Lady Antebellum is stealing her name. Not even bothering to check if the name was already taken, Lady Antebellum made an official announcement on social media and quickly changed its name to Lady A on the media distribution platforms Spotify and Apple Music.
Anita White, who has been playing under the Lady A blues name for more than 20 years, told Rolling Stone that she is immensely frustrated over the situation. She pointed out the irony in Lady Antebellum supposedly changing its name to support “racial equality,” all the while thieving intellectual property from a black performer.
“This is my life,” Lady A stated. “Lady A is my brand, I’ve used it for over 20 years, and I’m proud of what I’ve done. This is too much right now. They’re using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time. If it mattered, it would have mattered to them before. It shouldn’t have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it.”
Black Lives Matter, a massive distraction, would be better named Black Lives Bullies. Check out The Health Ranger Report below to learn more:
A representative for Lady Antebellum told the media that the band was unaware of the original Lady A when it first made the announcement about a name change, and is now planning to reach out to her about the situation. However, as of this writing, Lady Antebellum is still calling itself Lady A on Apple Music, suggesting that the band has no plans to revert back to its original and rightful name.
“It’s an opportunity for them to pretend they’re not racist or pretend this means something to them,” the original Lady A added about Lady Antebellum’s rip-off of her name, which is nothing but empty virtue signaling as usual from the leftist white crowd.
“If it did, they would’ve done some research. And I’m not happy about that. You found me on Spotify easily – why couldn’t they?”
We can also confirm that the original Lady A is easily pulled up both on Spotify and Apple Music when running a search for “Lady A.” It would have taken Lady Antebellum less than two seconds to figure this out, had the band actually put some conscious thought into the matter.
What we have here is a potential trademark infringement situation that the original Lady A can pursue if she wishes to do so. Stealing someone’s name in the entertainment world is a big deal, and Lady A has every right to seek justice and reclaim her name.
“Just like other goods and services in the marketplace such as Nike or McDonald’s, band names can be protected under trademark law,” says intellectual property attorney Wesley Lewis.
“It’s about who is first to use a name. Audience size is irrelevant,” adds Bob Celestin, a longtime music attorney who has represented names like Pusha T and Missy Elliott.”
