It’s amazing how many Americans, despite sitting in the lap of liberty and having a list of constitutional rights at their disposal, actively seek to do away with those rights through regulation and governmental mandates. In Deerfield, Illinois, for example, liberals have voted to ban the ownership of the AR-15, one of the most popular and most effective semi-automatic rifles currently on the market. Worse still, the legislation gives a very broad definition of the term “assault weapon,” making virtually any firearm that uses a detachable magazine capable of holding more than ten rounds outlawed in the Chicago suburb.
Citizens of Deerfield were asked to turn over their weapons to the police, and failing to do so would result in a fine of anywhere from $250 to $1000 each day.
But Deerfield isn’t the only part of the country that has voted to poke holes in the Second Amendment as of late. As covered by Matt Vespa of Townhall.com and initially reported by CBS News, on May 15, the City Council in Boulder, Colorado “unanimously passed a ban on the sale and possession of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and bump-stock devices – even while attorneys from a pro-gun rights group threatened legal action.” CBS News goes on to explain that “owners of high-capacity magazines and bump stocks will have until July 15 to dispose of the firearm accessories or sell them. After that point, they will not be permitted in the city of Boulder.” (Related: Leftists are lying about gun control by failing to mention that the vast majority of gun deaths in America are suicides.)
As foolish and absurd as this legislation is, it’s still worth considering why the people of Boulder, Colorado (or at the least the people that make up the Boulder City Council) are so willing to surrender their Second Amendment rights. As Boulder Councilman Aaron Brockett stated at the vote: “My hope is that we will see more bans at the state level and one day at the federal level so these weapons will no longer be available.”
So, in other words, the mentality that currently exists in Boulder as it relates to firearms is the same mentality that exists more broadly throughout the entire Democrat Party – more gun laws will lead to less guns, which will lead to less crime.
But is this really how it will turn out for the people of Boulder? Will this ban on so-called “assault weapons,” high-capacity magazines and bump-stock devices really decrease crime? Not quite.
It’s a shame that the members of the Boulder City Council didn’t consider how the implementation of more gun laws would impact the law-abiding citizens that live there. The truth is, infringing upon the peoples’ God-given right to keep and bear arms for personal self-defense puts them at a tremendous disadvantage, and renders them incapable of effectively fighting back against home invaders and mass murderers. By contrast, criminals don’t follow the law – somebody that’s crazy enough to break into a home or commit homicide would likely look at this new legislation in Boulder, laugh to himself, and then proceed with the assault. Criminals remain armed, while law-abiding citizens are disarmed. (Related: 98 percent of mass shootings occur in gun free zones.)
It has been well established that the implementation of more gun laws does not decrease crime rates. Back in January, David Freddoso of the Washington Examiner compared the latest FBI crime data to one estimate of gun ownership rates and found that there was no significant correlation between the two, just as he demonstrated four years prior in 2014. This means that, contrary to the liberal narrative, and just as conservatives have been saying for decades now, more gun laws are not the answer.
